Workshops on water, energy & sound, a new release & Floodlight at Warming Up

Dear Reader,

Autumn is here, and it’s a busy one! There are two workshops coming up that I’d love for you to join, a new release with a gig in Berlin, and Floodlight returning to Amsterdam. I’d also like to look back at a few highlights from September.

All the best,

Mark

Workshop at FIBER: Brackish Networks

What if, instead of humming data centers, we had decentralised floating nodes? In this two-day lab at FIBER we’ll rethink computation and networks in and around water.

Together we’ll build brackish water-battery floats, harvest energy from the canals to refresh an e-ink screen or send messages over LoRa, and put a small mesh network into the Amsterdam waters. On day two we’ll ask what a network that’s rarely online should actually say. Then we put the nodes in the water and see what survives!

14 & 15 November, 11:00–17:00 · Poortgebouw, Tolhuistuin (FIBER office)

There are only a few days left to apply!

Out 23 October: re:natura #06 – Hexapoda + Berlin show

I’m happy to open the new compilation by Berlin collective re:natura with my track Cold Water Climb, which reimagines the sonic life of an underwater insect. The sixth edition is all about the six-legged, with ten experimental pieces on insects as ecological force. Proceeds beyond production costs go to Friends of the Earth Germany.

For those of you with Bandcamp, I still have two codes to give away: laju-5hze & c69d-7eyu.

To celebrate the release, I’ll be playing live in Berlin with re:natura on 25th of October at ACUD Club. Come say hi if you’re around!

28 November at Baltan Laboratories: Storytelling with Geolocative Sound

During this afternoon at Baltan, we’ll build geolocative soundwalks: sounds pinned to specific spots in the landscape, triggered as you walk past. We’ll start by looking closely at our surroundings, from plants breaking through the pavement to the creatures under bark and soil, and ask what we want to bring to the foreground.

More info and signup coming online soon!

Floodlight at Warming Up Festival

Floodlight, the installation Marjolijn Boterenbrood and I first showed at Mediamatic in March, is coming back! We’ll be presenting it at Tolhuistuin’s Warming Up Festival (19–22 November) in Amsterdam.

From the Foam: looking back

The premiere of From the Foam at Paradiso during Science & Cocktails: Emergence was a huge success! Thanks to everyone who came, and to the scientists whose models ended up on stage.

I’m also very happy to share that I’ve been selected for the EAAS Art+Science Fellowship, so From the Foam will keep growing over the coming year, in close dialogue with scientists from different fields. More on that soon!

Field-recording workshops: looking back

In September I got to run a series of field-recording workshops with Ildikó Horváth as part of her Sensing Sloterplas series, which was wonderful. Together we submerged ourselves in the sounds of the Sloterplas, both above and below the surface, and talked about the history of field recording and the science of underwater listening. Thanks to everyone who joined!

'till soon!

Best,
Mark

Thanks for your continued support—I can't wait to share more updates with you soon! If you'd like to stay in touch, check out my website or follow me on Bsky or Mastodon (and, still Instagram) for updates on projects!

His work gives voice to the more-than-human world, exploring planetary processes such as eroding biodiversity and the impacts of warming waters. Through installations and audiovisual performances, IJzerman blends fieldwork, artistic research, and collaboration with experts from diverse fields, including biology, astronomy, and ecology. His practice incorporates living organisms, custom-built software, and film, creating dialogues that challenge the boundaries between technology and ecology. Influenced by speculative fiction, IJzerman examines the tensions between technological advancement and environmental degradation. His projects often feature interactive or live elements, where living ecosystems and digital media come together. This interplay prompts audiences to rethink their ecological relationships.
