Upcoming AV live date, free workshops by the water & more!

Dear Reader,

I hope everyone had a good summer. There's a special performance coming up that I'd love to invite you to, plus some workshops — and I'd like to take a moment to look back at a few performances and exhibitions from the last few months!

All the best,

Mark

15 September at Paradiso - From the Foam

From the Foam is a new commission made in collaboration with scientists, on the topic of emergence.

It's a performance in which simple emergent rules give rise to forms that are reminiscent of very different scales: from light, to cells, to animals, their interactions, social dynamics, et cetera. I'm working with algorithms from the researchers themselves, so what you see and hear on stage partly comes out of their models.

After doing very specific work for the last few years, either hyperlocal or about specific species, it's been fun to 'zoom out' and look at organisms through a scientific lens.

This brand new commission premieres at Paradiso Amsterdam during Science & Cocktails on the 15th of September!

The performance is funded by NWA Emergence at All Scales.

Free field-recording workshops

Together with Ildikó Horváth I'm giving a series of free field recording workshops in Amsterdam this September as part of her 'Sensing Sloterplas' series, with a special focus on listening on — and under — the water surface. We'll be at De Natuurkamer and Buurtwerkplaats Noorderhof.

There will be workshops on different topics, with different organisations coming in the fall, too. Stay tuned!

NEXT XR

I'm very happy to be part of the new NEXT XR group by We Are Playgrounds, which means following a development trajectory focused on immersive experience making over the coming year.

I'll be researching spatial dramaturgy: how can AV material be staged with performers, physical elements, using collective optics or more conventional XR techniques?

Floodlight: looking back

video preview

Looking back at Floodlight, the lovely collaboration that Marjolijn Boterenbrood and I showed back in March at Mediamatic! As Floodlight was a great success, we'll be showing it again in Amsterdam in the fall. Stay tuned!

Togetherness - CIIIC ADRIE consortium

I'm part of the recently funded consortium Togetherness researching how the immersive experience of live music can be shaped. Together with music venues, other IX makers and mid-career artists, we'll be developing methods for applying IX in the music sector.

Flounder Maps at Rewire

I loved playing Rewire back in April with my own album 'Flounder Maps'. New shows coming up, starting with a date in Berlin half October with Re:natura!

'till soon!

Best,
Mark

Thanks for your continued support—I can't wait to share more updates with you soon! If you'd like to stay in touch, check out my website or follow me on Bsky or Mastodon (and, still Instagram) for updates on projects!

Mark IJzerman

Mark IJzerman is an interdisciplinary artist who investigates ecological themes through the use of technology. His work gives voice to the more-than-human world, exploring planetary processes such as eroding biodiversity and the impacts of warming waters. Through installations and audiovisual performances, IJzerman blends fieldwork, artistic research, and collaboration with experts from diverse fields, including biology, astronomy, and ecology. His practice incorporates living organisms, custom-built software, and film, creating dialogues that challenge the boundaries between technology and ecology. Influenced by speculative fiction, IJzerman examines the tensions between technological advancement and environmental degradation. His projects often feature interactive or live elements, where living ecosystems and digital media come together. This interplay prompts audiences to rethink their ecological relationships.
